The Sistine Chapel was originally constructed in the 15th century by Pope Sixtus IV, taking its name from him. It was built to be the official residence of the Pope and the cardinals of the Catholic Church.
The magnificent frescoes on the ceiling and walls of the chapel were painted by great Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo, who were commissioned to decorate the interior. The chapel is also known for its stunning architecture, featuring soaring arches and elegant stonework.
