What can you see with your Vatican Museum ticket?
Vatican Museums tickets provide access to one of the world's largest art collections, spanning classical antiquity through the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The route includes the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes, the Raphael Rooms, and extensive galleries of paintings, sculptures, and geographical maps.

The Sistine Chapel
Vatican Museum tickets provide entry to the Sistine Chapel, where visitors observe the frescoes of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The ceiling depicts nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the central panel, The Creation of Adam, where the creator reaches toward the first man.
On the altar wall, the artist painted The Last Judgment, a massive composition featuring hundreds of figures. Beyond the Renaissance works, the chapel serves as the site for the papal conclave. The artwork illustrates the pinnacle of High Renaissance technique and is the primary destination for many who purchase Vatican Museum tickets.
What should you know before visiting the Vatican Museum?
Visitors to the Vatican Museums should consider these practical details before arriving:
- Strict dress code is enforced at entry: Shoulders and knees must be covered; sleeveless tops, shorts, and short skirts are not permitted.
- Security screening can cause delays: Bags and visitors pass through metal detectors similar to airport security; arriving during off-peak hours helps reduce wait times.
- Photography restrictions apply in the Sistine Chapel: Taking photos or videos inside the chapel is strictly prohibited; guards actively enforce this rule.
- The museums cover over 7 kilometers of exhibition space: A complete visit typically takes 3 to 4 hours; prioritizing specific galleries helps manage time effectively.
- Large bags and backpacks are not allowed: Items exceeding 40x35x15 cm must be left at the cloakroom; carrying only essentials streamlines entry.
- Silence is required in the Sistine Chapel: Talking is not permitted inside.
- The route is mostly one-way: Backtracking through galleries is generally not possible.
- Limited seating exists throughout the museums: Wearing comfortable shoes is essential. Benches are sparse in most galleries.
- Food and drinks are prohibited inside exhibition areas: The museums have designated cafeterias and snack bars; outside food cannot be consumed in galleries.
- Touching artworks and displays is strictly forbidden: Guards monitor all galleries; violations may result in immediate removal.
- Accessibility for visitors with disabilities: The museums provide elevators and designated step-free routes for wheelchairs and strollers; manual wheelchairs are available for rent free of charge at the cloakroom.
- The Sistine Chapel is located at the end of the route: Visitors must walk through many other galleries to reach the chapel; there is no direct "express" entrance only for the Sistine Chapel.
